Intern Highlight: Kristyna Mason

By: Philip Ballew

If you haven’t gotten to meet Kristina, she is great. She was one of our awesome interns this summer. Recently I got the chance to sit down with her, and learn more about what she does. Check it out!

Can you tell me a little about yourself?

Hi, there! I am a rising senior majoring in computer science with an emphasis in business. In addition to the summer courses I am taking, I am working as an intern for ThoughtSTEM this summer.

What did you do before you started interning with ThoughtSTEM?

I worked for many years to save enough money to go to university without taking out any loans. I have been able to support myself by being a self-taught website developer and graphic designer for various US and international organizations. I now work remotely and am projected to graduate in Spring 2020.

What was your initial attraction to ThoughtSTEM?

I think it was the notion of being a part of a small company that affected children in a positive way through computer science. I liked the sentiment of being an instructor to a wide age group of children while teaching them something that is immensely significant to me. Additionally, I was quite intrigued by the thought of working alongside the CEO of a company in the industry.

How are you feeling about your ThoughtSTEM internship so far?

It’s been great! I am projected to work 10 weeks for ThoughtSTEM this summer and I am really enjoying it so far. I think that teaching children how to program a video game is not only something fun that they enjoy doing but also something that is educational and piques their interest in computer science. I have gained an immense amount of information from working on a group project this summer. Not only have I had a new experience with working beside other computer science students in an industry environment, but I have also been able to work closely with Stephen Foster (CEO), who individually has helped me greatly.

When you’re not working at ThoughtSTEM, what do you do for fun?

If I am not working on school work or contract work, I am working on some of my fun side projects! I love brainstorming new app ideas or trying to create something that has not been done before. Right now, I am working on a game for Android and a Google Chrome extension. Outside of work, I enjoy being outside and visiting botanical gardens or checking out new local eateries!
