Saturday and Sunday Workshops at UCSD Campus, Lawrence Family JCC, and the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center

We have brought our popular weekend workshop program to the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center (JCC) ! Beginning Saturday, February 20th, we will also be bringing this program to the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center.

Each Saturday from 10:00 am -12:00 pm we will be in the Board Room of the JCC. Also on Saturdays, from 10:30am - 12:30pm we will be at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. engaging children with increasingly challenging programming tasks!

Now your child/children can attend workshops on Saturday, Sunday or both!

If you are a current holder of a 10 workshop punchcard, your card will be accepted at all three locations (UCSD, JCC, and RH Fleet). Also, if you are a current member of the JCC or Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, or UCSD faculty/staff, there are discounts on the single workshop purchase. (The initial price is $50.00 per workshop but is reduced to $40.00 per workshop with your membership!) There are other discounts for siblings and for the 10 workshop punchcard.

A Fun Way for Kids 8-14 to Learn Computer Science

Write code. Earn prizes. This is a fast-paced, exciting workshop where students of all ages choose from a variety of challenges designed to introduce them to programming and build their skill set. Students can join at any time because the challenges are self-paced. No lectures; students learn by doing with the help of our college mentors.

Although we have plenty of challenges in advanced languages like Javascript for those with programming experience, first-timers have the option of starting with material specifically designed to engage students with no prior programming experience. We start with simple projects in Scratch and slowly build the complexity of each consecutive challenge to teach students how to think like a programmer, not just copy and paste code from a workbook. Upon completing a challenge, each student earns a specific "achievement card," which makes it easy to track his/her progress and provides the students with greater motivation to attempt more complex projects!

What Sets Us Apart

Unmatched Expertise.

You may find lots of "how-to-code" courses online, but these are hard enough for experts to approach and were not developed with novice students in mind. ThoughtSTEM founders each earned their PhD from UC San Diego specializing in Computer Science Education and literally wrote the book on how to teach computer science to 8-14 year olds.

Mentorship from Local College Students.

We augment our workshop instructors with exceptional local college and high school students that have each mastered our curriculum. Besides serving as good role models, these mentors are often more approachable to younger students than adult teachers.

High Instructor-to-Student Ratio.

We work hard to train enough teachers and mentors to ensure that every student participates and no one gets left behind. By placing our workshops at three centralized locations like UCSD, JCC, and RH Fleet Science Center, we can provide the highest instructor-to-student ratio.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you get your curriculum?

ThoughtSTEM uses its own project-based curriculum. Our curriculum has been developed by our co-founders, PhDs in the field of computer science education.

Does my child need to bring their own computer?

Your child is welcome to bring her or his own computer to the workshop. We have a number of computers available, however, if your child does not have a computer to bring.

When and where are ThoughtSTEM workshops held?

Presently, ThoughtSTEM workshops are held at three locations; On Saturdays we run a workshop at the JCC from 10 am - 12 Noon and another at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center from 10:30am - 12:30pm. On Sundays we run two workshops at UCSD, one from 10 am - 12 Noon and the other from 2 pm - 4 pm. (Click for Directions)

Who helps my kids at the workshops?

ThoughtSTEM has hired several undergraduate mentors from UC San Diego to help mentor your kids. All of the mentors are highly qualified in both teaching and programming. We try to maintain a 4:1 student to mentor ratio in order to ensure your student gets the attention they deserve!

How do I sign up?

When do I pay?

You can pay online using one of the links above! When you add the workshop item to your shopping cart in your online store, you'll be asked to fill out some enrollment information about your child. You should receive a confirmation e-mail after you've completed the transaction online.

So how much does it cost?

The cost for one 2-hr workshop is $50, but there are currently several discounts available.

What are the current discounts?

  • We have sibling discounts if you have two children ($40 for each child) or three or more children ($30 for each child). The sibling discounts are intended to help large families with more than one child interested in attending.
  • If you purchase 10 workshops in advance, each workshop is only $35.
  • If you're UCSD staff/faculty, a JCC member, or a member at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, your children get the workshops at a rate of $40 per workshop. E-mail us at to get access to this discount.

If I purchase 10 workshops in advance, does my student have to attend the next 10 consecutive workshops?

No! We will keep a "punch card" for your student to keep track of their 10 workshops. This way your student can miss a workshop here and there without any problem.

Can I as a parent stay at the workshop or do I have to leave my student there alone?

Parents are always allowed to stick around during the workshops. We would encourage you to let your child do the projects on their own, but you are welcome to learn with them!

Is it a problem if my student can only come every other week?

It's not a problem at all! We've designed these workshops so that students can jump in at any skill level at any time. We have challenges available for all skill levels and our mentors will help your student decide which challenges would be best to pursue.
