What Sets Us Apart
You may find lots of "how-to-code" courses online, but these are hard enough for experts to approach and were not developed with novice students in mind. ThoughtSTEM founders each earned their PhD from UC San Diego specializing in Computer Science Education and literally wrote the book on how to teach computer science to 8-14 year olds.
Mentorship from Local College Students.
We augment our workshop instructors with exceptional local college and high school students that have each mastered our curriculum. Besides offering good role models, these mentors are often more approachable to younger students than adult teachers.
1:4 Instructor-to-Student Ratio.
We work hard to train enough teachers and mentors to ensure that every student participates and no one gets left behind. By placing our workshops at a centralized location like UCSD, we can provide the highest instructor-to-student ratio.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do you get your curriculum?
ThoughtSTEM uses its own project-based curriculum. Our curriculum has been developed by our co-founders, PhDs in the field of computer science education.
Does my child need to bring their own computer?
Your child is welcome to bring her or his own computer to the workshop. We have a number of computers available, however, if your child does not have a computer to bring.
When and where are ThoughtSTEM workshops held?
At the moment, ThoughtSTEM workshops are held between 10am-12pm and 2-4pm on Sundays in room 1202 of the Computer Science and Engineering building at UC San Diego. (Click for Directions)
Who helps my kids at the workshops?
ThoughtSTEM has hired several undergraduate mentors from UC San Diego to help mentor your kids. All of the mentors are highly qualified in both teaching and programming. We try to maintain a 4:1 student to mentor ratio in order to ensure your student gets the attention they deserve!
How do I sign up?
Use one of the links above to purchase your place in the workshop & enroll your student!
When do I pay?
You can pay online using one of the links above! When you add the workshop item to your shopping cart in your online store, you'll be asked to fill out some enrollment information about your child. You should receive a confirmation e-mail after you've completed the transaction online.
So how much does it cost?
The cost for one 2-hr workshop is $50, but there are currently several discounts available.
What are the current discounts?
- We have sibling discounts if you have two children ($40 for each child) or three or more children ($30 for each child). The sibling discounts are intended to help large families with more than one child interested in attending.
- If you purchase 10 workshops in advance, each workshop is only $35.
- If you're UCSD staff or faculty, your children get the workshops at a rate of $40 per workshop. E-mail us at email@example.com to get access to this discount.
If I purchase 10 workshops in advance, does my student have to attend the next 10 consecutive workshops?
No! We will keep a "punch card" for your student to keep track of their 10 workshops. This way your student can miss a workshop here and there without any problem.
Can I as a parent stay at the workshop or do I have to leave my student there alone?
Parents are always allowed to stick around during the workshops. We would encourage you to let your child do the projects on their own, but you are welcome to learn with them!
Is it a problem if my student can only come every other week?
It's not a problem at all! We've designed these workshops so that students can jump in at any skill level at any time. We have challenges available for all skill levels and our mentors will help your student decide which challenges would be best to pursue.
Should my student bring a snack to the workshop?
We provide water and granola bars at the workshop, which are accessible by the students at any time during the workshop!
